By Festus Ahon

Access to clean and safe drinking water is a fundamental human right; yet, many communities in Nigeria still struggle to obtain it. In Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has prioritized the provision of potable water, recognizing its vital role in public health, economic growth, and overall quality of life.

Since taking office, he has taken significant measures to enhance water infrastructure, ensuring that both urban and rural communities benefit from sustainable potable water projects.

Governor Oborevwori’s development agenda for Delta State places strong emphasis on infrastructure and social welfare, with potable water supply as a key priority.

Recognizing the challenges many communities face—including inadequate boreholes and outdated pipelines—his administration has committed substantial resources to expanding and modernizing water facilities. His goal is clear: to provide as many Deltans as possible with access to clean water, reduce waterborne diseases, and improve daily living conditions.

Through its partnership with the World Bank-Assisted Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene Programme (SURWASH), the Oborevwori administration has launched several projects aimed at improving potable water access across the state.

These include: Revamping Existing Water Schemes. Governor Oborevwori’s administration has been rehabilitating water facilities, upgrading water treatment plants, and restoring broken pipelines. In cities such as Asaba, Warri and Ughelli, old waterworks are being revived to meet growing public demand for potable water.

Expansion of water supply to rural communities which often suffer the most from potable water scarcity. To bridge this gap, the state government has initiated the drilling of solar-powered boreholes in remote areas. These boreholes are designed to provide a sustainable source of clean water, thus reducing the reliance on contaminated streams and rivers water.

So far, so many water supply schemes have either been constructed or rehabilitated across several communities and cities across the state by the Oborevwori administration. They include: Rehabilitation of water supply at Issele- Uku, construction of water treatment plant at West End Secondary School, Asaba, Osubi Secondary School, Osubi, Evwreke Primary School, Osubi, construction of solar powered water supply at Amawa Layout, Oleh, Deghele, Tebu, Gbokoda, Ajamita, Udo, Oboghoro, Boji-Boji, Agbor, Umunede, Kwale, Obiaruku, Ughelli, Owa-Ekei, Owa-Alero, and Koko.

Others are the rehabilitation of solar- powered water supply scheme at Oleh, Olomoro, Enwhe, Egbo-Igbide, Irri, Uzere, Bethel Town, Emede, Aviara, Erowha, Umeh, Owodokpokpo, Igbide, Ivrogbo, Ederhie, Araya, Okpe-Isoko, Afiesere, Uwheru, Unenurhie, Sanubi-Orogun, Ohoror, Agbarha-Otor, Agadama, Ikwegwu-Agbarho, Okpe-Orogun, Ewu, Emu-Unor, Oliogo-Umuseti, Ogo-Ikilibi, Igbe-Ogume,Ogbe-Ogume, Ogbole-Ogume, Ibrede, Umukwata, Umutu, Obinomba, Amai, Akoku, Edegbrode, Adeje, Ujovwe, Saniko, Omavovwe, Okpara-Agbarha, Oviri-Ogor, Aghalokpe, Orhokpokpo, Ewhawha, Edjegba-Agbarha, Eyara-Enwhe, Utuloho-Aviara, Okpare-Aviara, Emu-Obodeti, Umuseti-Ogbe, Umuse-Deli, Amoji, Lagos-Ogbe, Utagba-Ogbe, Utagba-Unor, Mereje, Okwuabude, Oviri-Okpe, Umiaghwa, Gudu-Gudu, Unurie-Aghalokpe, Ughwagba, Ghana Quarters, Obiaruku, Imiroje, Edjekemevor, among others.

Speaking during one of the inspection visits to the projects, the State Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr Isaac Wilkie, lauded Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his support leading to the massive transformation of the state’s water sector.

He said the purpose of the inspection was to ensure that all errors observed were put together and rectified, adding that the state government was pursuing a tripartite power supply system through solar, generator and public power supply, to ensure continuous potable water supply across the state.

However, recognizing that government resources alone might not be sufficient, the Oborevwori administration is engaging private sector players to invest in water infrastructure. These partnerships with NGOs and international agencies are helping to fund projects and ensure long-term maintenance of water supply facilities.

Beyond providing infrastructure, the government is also enforcing policies to ensure proper water management. Agencies responsible for water distribution are being restructured to improve efficiency, while communities are being sensitized on the importance of water conservation and hygiene.

The impact of these water sector initiatives extends beyond just providing clean drinking water; improved access to potable water is reducing the incidence of diseases such as cholera and typhoid, which are often linked to contaminated water sources.

Additionally, women and children, who typically bear the burden of fetching water from distant locations, now have more time for other productive activities, including education and income-generating work.

Despite these strides, climate change, population growth, and funding constraints pose ongoing threats to water security.

However, Governor Oborevwori remains steadfast in his vision, continuously seeking innovative solutions to sustain water availability in the state. His administration is also looking into advanced water treatment technologies and enhanced monitoring systems to ensure quality and reliability.

Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to potable water supply is transforming lives in Delta State. Through strategic investments, policy reforms, and community engagement, his government is laying the foundation for a future where every Deltan has access to clean, safe water. While challenges persist, the progress made so far is a testament to his dedication to improving the well-being of his people. With sustained efforts and collaboration, Delta State is on the path to achieving lasting water security.

…Says his administration responds to critics with projects

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, within the week, said that his administration would continue to respond to criticisms with verifiable projects that are positively impacting the lives of Deltans.

He noted that there had been a few members of opposition political parties in the state who were only functional on social media platforms, adding that “Deltans are aware of the projects executed by his administration in their localities and appreciate what his administration is doing for them”.

Represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, Oborevwori spoke on Thursday during the inauguration of Boji-Boji Owa Mixed Modern Market, Ika North-East Local Government Area of Delta State.

He said, “the few members of the opposition political parties are only making noise on social media; our people are seeing and enjoying the projects we have executed in their communities. It is good that with verifiable projects, we are responding to our critics.”

Sir Festus Ogbanzu, who spoke on behalf of impacted communities and Hon. Monday Odigwe, Chairman, Ika North-East Local Government, among others, who spoke at the occasion, thanked Governor Oborevwori for executing people -oriented projects in the state.

…Seeks redesign of school curriculum for job creation

Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Wednesday, called for the effective redesign of academic curricula for graduates to have the technical know-how to be job and wealth creators.

He made the call at the 4th Founder’s Day Celebration of the University of Delta, UNIDEL, Agbor, Delta State.

Represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, Governor Oborevwori said; “quality, functional education is one of the priority areas of the MORE agenda of my administration. We believe that education is not merely about imparting knowledge; it is also about shaping character, fostering creativity, and equipping the students with the right skill-sets and mindsets that they need to excel in the global marketplace.

“The major drawback of our current educational system is that it prepares the graduates for salaried employment.

“As a government, we are determined to reverse the course by ensuring that technical and vocational education feature prominently in the academic curricular of our educational institutions, beginning from primary school; it is my earnest expectation that UNIDEL will ensure that the academic curricular is such that graduates from here will have the knowledge and technical know-how to be job and wealth creators.”

A prominent group known as the Delta Political Forum (DPF) has expressed its appreciation for Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s commitment to infrastructure development throughout Delta State.

The organization made its comments following a comprehensive tour of key projects, including the bridges at PTI Junction and the DSC Roundabout, which took place on Thursday, February 27, 2025, after the group’s monthly meeting at the PTI Conference Centre.

The DPF emphasized that the governor’s efforts have not only addressed concerns regarding the state’s infrastructure but have also fostered greater connectivity and safety for residents.

The group observed that the ongoing bridges project and road rehabilitation if completed will play a crucial role in easing traffic congestion and facilitating smoother transportation routes across the state.

Daniel Emaye, Ochuko Nemejor Fredrick, Engr. Godspower Benakiegha, Akassa Richard, Ajejevwe Eloho, Orogun Voke, Hon. Rex Ogbakpa and Hon. Johnson Agboyegbe.

Governor Oborevwori’s Performance Has Exceeded Deltans’ Expectations – Edijala

Oplus_131072

DEACON RAYMOND EDIJALA is the Executive Assistant to the Governor of Delta State for Project Monitoring and a former Transition Committee Chairman of Udu Local Government Council. In this interview with SUNDAY APAH, he discusses the newly formed Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Udu Federal Constituency Forum, the development initiatives of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and other pertinent public issues.

Excerpts:

As the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Project Monitoring, how would you assess the Governor’s performance since taking office?

The Governor’s performance has been nothing short of outstanding. I am genuinely impressed by the volume of projects he has initiated and the level of empowerment he is providing. The political patronage extended to all sectors has exceeded my expectations. Overall, I can confidently say that the Governor has excelled in his duties.

What is your response to the minority voices from opposition parties claiming that the Governor has not performed?

The criticisms from the opposition are largely unfounded. It is common for opponents to seek out reasons to criticize the Governor, irrespective of the realities on the ground. The accomplishments we are witnessing make it disheartening for anyone to claim otherwise. In my view, the opposition has little—if anything—to substantiate their claims. I am confident that by 2027, we will see numerous developmental projects credited to the Governor.

What do you believe has led to the defection of some members of the PDP to the APC in the state?

The motivations for these defections appear to be driven by personal interests aimed at creating the perception that their party is performing better. From my vantage point as the Executive Assistant on Project Monitoring, I can attest that the PDP-led government is making significant strides. If the APC were in power, I doubt they would achieve what this government is accomplishing. Look at our roads, schools, market projects, and various empowerment initiatives—all indicative of the progress we are making. It is imperative that the opposition recognizes the success of our Governor.

What is your stance regarding the calls from some individuals in Delta South and North Senatorial Districts for the Governor to serve just one term, thereby allowing a candidate from Delta Central to take over? Is this approach favorable to the South and North districts?

I believe that the Governor is already achieving remarkable results in his first term and deserves a second term based on these ongoing accomplishments. The principle of “one good turn deserves another” applies here. If the Governorship goes to another person in Delta central, what happens if the succeeding candidate seeks re-election? This could lead to significant unrest, and the state is not prepared for that. I urge everyone, particularly those in the opposition, to remain calm and support the Governor in delivering the M.O.R.E Agenda to the people of Delta and to advocate for his second term to maintain our existing zoning arrangements.

Could you share some outcomes from the Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Udu Federal Constituency Forum meeting held in Asaba?

Our meeting was a positive step in the right direction, although the operational framework still needs refinement. The intention is clear: we have our Governor, Representatives in the House, local government chairmen, commissioners, and, importantly, we need to ensure unity moving forward. While there are currently some grievances, I believe that, with sincerity and a commitment to collaboration, we can address these issues over time.

Sir, the Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Udu Federal Constituency did not win the last elections. Do you believe that with these forces uniting as one, they can overcome the opposition in 2027?

In politics, unity is key. The more participants we have in this effort, the more effective we will be. I encourage everyone to set aside differences, foster forgiveness, and work collaboratively to include all voices. Sending the right signals to the public is crucial. Other constituencies have successfully formed their forums, and I am optimistic that by uniting, we can mobilize women, youth, and others towards our common goal of electoral success.

You previously mentioned the Governor’s numerous projects in the state. Can you confirm if the Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Udu Federal Constituency has benefited from these initiatives, and if so, could you highlight some of them?

It is essential to recognize that in politics, those who cast votes often take precedence over those who do not. While we have ongoing projects in our constituency, such as the nearly completed Udu Harbour Market, many more are needed. Roads have been addressed, and though there is still work to be done, I am confident that by 2027, all dilapidated roads will receive the attention they deserve. While expectations may not fully align with the current state of affairs, I assure you that the government under Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori is committed to delivering even more for our people.

Currently, the PDP at the federal level faces numerous factions and challenges. Do you believe that the PDP can secure victories in the upcoming 2027 elections? How can the party resolve these issues swiftly?

Indeed, we are currently facing significant disarray within the party. If we proceed into the electoral arena disjointed, our chances of success at the national level are slim. I urge the party leadership to introspect and engage in compromise to unify our efforts as we approach the 2027 elections. Despite the existing tensions, notably between the secretary and the chairman, our focus must be on the larger goal of ensuring political cohesion and strength moving forward.

Police Rescue Five Kidnapped Church Members in Delta

By Sunday Apah

The police in Delta State have rescued five members of Elyon Paradise Ministry who were kidnapped last Saturday in Ogwashi-uku, Aniocha South Local Government Area of the state.

In a statement by the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, it was explained that the unfortunate kidnapping incident occurred on 22/2/2025, when the five members of Elyon Paradise Ministry in Ogwashi-uku were taken while attending a night vigil service at the church.

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, took decisive action by deploying tactical teams to Ogwashi-uku, which included relocating operatives from the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber-Crime Squad to the area, with a clear mandate to ensure that the kidnapped victims were rescued unharmed.

Consequently, on 25th February 2025, operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber-Crime Squad, led by the Commander, CSP Labe Joseph, embarked on a sting operation alongside members of the Ubuluku community vigilante and other concerned indigenes of the Ubuluku community.

They stormed Ubuluku forest, where the victims were being held hostage.

Upon sighting the police, the kidnappers engaged in a fierce gun duel but could not withstand the superior firepower of the police. They took to their heels and abandoned the victims.

All five kidnapped members of Elyon Paradise Ministry were rescued unharmed and have since reunited with their families.

Exhibits recovered from the scene included thirteen rounds of expended cartridges and a bag containing the sum of one million three hundred thousand naira (N1,300,000), suspected to be ransom money.

CODAF Calls for Greater Transparency in Oil Contracts

By Sunday Apah

The Community Development Advocacy Foundation (CODAF), a non-governmental organization, has emphasized the importance of transparency in contracts between oil companies and host communities to ensure sustainable benefits for local populations.

This message was conveyed during a town hall meeting titled “Addressing Community Grievances on the Cost of Corruption in the Oil and Gas Sector in Isoko, Delta State,” organized by CODAF in partnership with budgiT.

At the meeting held in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area, Council Chairman Mr. Godwin Ogorugba commended CODAF for raising awareness among oil-producing communities about their relationships with oil companies.

Represented by Vice Chairman Mrs. Evelyn Aluta, Ogorugba said, “This advocacy is timely, as corruption has deeply infiltrated our lives. Even in the marketplace, corruption prevails as sellers seek to maximize their profits.”

He continued, “Corruption has led to significant societal decline, particularly in the oil and gas sector. We must ask ourselves who is going to tackle this issue at the grassroots level. It is our responsibility, which makes this advocacy crucial.”

Facilitator Mr. Fred Nowho highlighted the period from 1969 to 2021 as one where governance in the petroleum sector was severely lacking.

He noted that the introduction of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) in 2021 established new standards for oil companies involved in exploration and exploitation, setting the stage for improved community relations.

“The goal is to educate communities on knowing their rights and holding companies accountable for any violations,” he explained.

“Unfortunately, many community leaders are unaware of the details within the PIA beyond the sections that address community trust development.

“Without understanding the agreements between oil companies and the federal government, it is impossible to advocate effectively for community interests.”

Ayo Nerfertiti stressed the need for community leaders to take proactive measures against corruption in the oil and gas sector, urging them to hold companies accountable for any breaches.

“We must avoid shortcuts in order to bring about the necessary development our communities require,” he said.

Dr. Mrs. Okiemute Edewor from the Department of Geography and Sustainability at Delta State University also praised CODAF for organizing the informative session.

“What we’ve learned today is crucial; we are no longer interested in the minimal compensation offered by oil companies. Instead, we demand that they fulfill their obligations,” she asserted.

“Let’s unite to fight for a sustainable environment and ensure oil companies meet their responsibilities.”

In response to the proceedings, Prince Asesa Jerry, Vice Chairman of Ellu, expressed gratitude for the insights gained during the meeting.

“This program has illuminated many aspects we were previously unaware of. We now understand how to approach oil companies, empowered by the laws that support us. I appreciate CODAF and the facilitators for bringing this important knowledge to our community.”

Federal Roads: It’s a Fallacious Misrepresentation to Claim Delta State Govt. is Leaving Everything for NDDC – Oborevwori

By Sunday Apah

The Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has dismissed claims made by the commissioner representing Delta on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Board, that the Delta State Government is neglecting the construction of federal roads in the state for the NDDC.

The governor characterized these statements as fallacious misrepresentations.

Governor Oborevwori made these remarks during the inauguration of the reconstructed 9.6 km Abraka-Oben Road and the flag-off of the reconstruction of failed sections of the Abraka-Agbor Road (Phase 1) in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area.

He reiterated the state government’s readiness to collaborate with the Federal Government for the overall socio-economic development of the state.

Represented by the Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, Governor Oborevwori emphasized the Delta State Government’s demonstrable commitment to addressing federal road issues within the state.

He reflected on the condition of the Benin-Warri Road prior to state intervention.

“I recall that Mr. Speaker, in his previous capacity, approved funds for the rehabilitation of the Benin-Sapele Road by the Delta State Government.

“While he was Speaker, the Delta State Government recognized the urgency to intervene on the Benin-Warri highway, especially from Amukpe to Effurun.

“It was critical at that time, as vehicles were taking days to travel from Benin to Warri,” he said.

Oborevwori noted, “The government rehabilitated that road during his tenure. Therefore, suggesting that the Delta State Government is abandoning everything for the NDDC is a gross misrepresentation that I must correct here and now.”

He added, “Let me remind you that the bridges being constructed in the Warri area are part of a Federal Trunk A road, and the state government is intervening to reduce travel time.

“The Ughelli-Asaba dualization project spans about 180 km. I encourage you to drive from Ughelli to Asaba and witness the remarkable interventions made by the Delta State Government on this federal highway.

“We have intervened several times on the road you are here to flag off today.”

Governor Oborevwori’s accomplishments have been recognized by major media outlets, including THISDAY/ARISE News and New Telegraph Newspaper, which named him Governor of the Year (Infrastructure).

The governor reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to collaborating with the federal government led by President Bola Tinubu to transform the state.

He expressed his belief that the success of the Federal Government directly contributes to the success of state governments.

He commended the NDDC for initiating the reconstruction of the crucial access road from Abraka to Oben and urged for the road’s completion to Benin.

“I appreciate the NDDC board for their vision and for understanding the challenges at hand, as well as for providing the policy guidelines for this important project,” he said.

“I am pleased that the NDDC is focusing on addressing failed sections of roads throughout the region.

“The Delta State Government firmly believes in our partnership with the federal government under President Bola Tinubu.

“We understand that the success of the Federal Government will naturally lead to the state’s success as well.”

Governor Oborevwori expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his support of the NDDC board and urged him to continue to prioritize the needs of the Niger Delta community.

“I am unsure if the NDDC mobilizes contractors, but in Delta State, we ensure that our contractors are mobilized up to 40 percent to mitigate the impact of inflation on them. I also thank Mr. President for appointing capable individuals to manage our ministries, departments, and agencies for the benefit of Nigerians.”

Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, commended the NDDC for adhering to President Tinubu’s directive to reconstruct section one of the road from Abraka to Oben.

He praised Governor Oborevwori for his proactive measures concerning federal roads in the state and encouraged governors nationwide to view intervention agencies as partners in progress rather than rivals.

Chairman of the NDDC Governing Board, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, lauded the executive management for implementing the board’s directives, stating, “We are pleased that work has commenced along the Abraka-Agbor Road and at the Uromi junction in Agbor.”

Managing Director of the NDDC, Chief Sam Ogbuku, affirmed that the NDDC is working diligently under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership to enhance infrastructure in the Niger Delta.

“Before the reconstruction of this road, we intervened in certain areas of the East-West Road to prevent undue hardship for residents,” he remarked.

He also recognized the contributions of state governments to the development of the Niger Delta, clarifying that the NDDC serves as an interventionist agency aimed at complementing the efforts of state governments.

Late Pa Clark Was A True Patriot Characterised by Unwavering Integrity – Oborevwori

By Sunday Apah

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, visited the Clark family on Friday to express his condolences following the passing of their patriarch, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark.

He described the late Chief Clark as a true patriot characterized by unwavering integrity.

During his visit to the family’s home in Kiagbodo, the Governor honored the memory of the esteemed elder statesman, highlighting his significant contributions to the nation and the fulfillment of a life well-lived.

Governor Oborevwori noted that Chief E.K. Clark, as he was widely known, was deeply dedicated to the advancement of the Niger Delta region and played a vital role in the country’s development. “He has left an indelible mark on our history,” the Governor stated.

Accompanied by Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, and other distinguished officials, the Governor emphasized the late statesman’s remarkable qualities of boldness, courage, focus, and articulation.
