CDHR Appeals to IGP Egbetokun to Reevaluate Police Escort Assignments

By Sunday Apah

Comrade (Dr) Kehinde Prince Taiga, the National President of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), has raised alarms regarding the backgrounds of individuals being assigned police escorts.

He has called on Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun to initiate a thorough vetting process for anyone granted police protection.

In light of recent incidents where individuals with known criminal histories have been spotted accompanied by police escorts, Taiga emphasized the need for a reassessment of this practice to ensure it aligns with the values of a reputable society.

He pointed out that it is unreasonable for a nation struggling with a shortage of security personnel to allocate police escorts to less significant individuals.

Taiga argued that halting this inappropriate allocation would be beneficial for the public, who are increasingly vulnerable in today’s environment.

In a statement released to the press in Warri, Taiga expressed dismay that notorious figures such as scammers, money launderers, and land encroachers are seen displaying police escorts, sometimes even using them to intimidate those with whom they have disputes, whether in police stations or courts.

“Our recent survey of individuals with police escorts revealed that many have acquired their wealth through dubious means,” Taiga noted.

“These individuals leverage their ill-gotten gains to secure police protection, enabling them to commit further offenses and exert pressure on those they consider adversaries.”

Taiga urged IGP Egbetokun to promptly begin profiling individuals currently assigned police escorts to remove protections from those who do not warrant them, for the greater good of society.

“We cannot lament the lack of adequate security personnel to address rampant crime while simultaneously assigning these valuable resources to individuals who do not deserve them, leaving the general populace vulnerable,” he stated.

The CDHR also criticized the police and judiciary for favoring wealth over justice in both criminal and civil cases. They highlighted a disturbing trend where law enforcement and judicial officials often favor the affluent, even in instances where they are the alleged offenders.

“We have observed how this damaging trend allows the police and the judiciary to favor the wealthy at the expense of the poor, even when guilt has been established,” Taiga asserted. “We say enough is enough when it comes to this miscarriage of justice.”

Taiga called upon the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) and Chairman of the National Judicial Council (NJC), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, to implement necessary reforms in the judicial system to eliminate corruption and ensure justice is served fairly, restoring trust among citizens.

As the holiday season approaches, the CDHR also appealed to IGP Egbetokun to issue a directive against professional misconduct among police officers, especially during this time when they might resort to unethical practices in pursuit of quick financial gains for holiday celebrations.

Taiga emphasized that a plea for integrity from law enforcement during the festive season is essential, as the public typically bears the brunt of any misconduct. He warned that exploiting desperation in the current challenging economic climate could lead to further issues down the line.

Governor Oborevwori Welcomes Donation of ICU Unit from Pastor Agidigbo

By Sunday Apah

On Tuesday, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, accepted the generous donation of a six-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) from Pastor Chuks Agidigbo, which will be housed at the Central Hospital in Kwale.

Governor Oborevwori expressed his appreciation for the rarity of individuals who utilize their financial resources for the benefit of the community.

The donation, facilitated through the Chuks Agidigbo Leadership Foundation and Medast Limited, aims to enhance healthcare services in the Ndokwa West Local Government Area of Delta State.

During the event, which was attended by various dignitaries, the Governor, represented by his Senior Policy Adviser, Rt. Hon. Funkekeme Solomon, highlighted the significance of the donation, stating, “I am thrilled to stand with the Chuks Agidigbo Leadership Foundation and celebrate this humanitarian initiative at the Central Hospital, Kwale. It is not often that we see individuals invest their hard-earned money into the welfare of others.”

He noted that the newly established ICU aligns with the healthcare objectives of his administration’s M.O.R.E Agenda. The facility is expected to significantly address the needs of patients requiring intensive care, especially during health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. “This unit not only provides essential medical support but also eases the burden on healthcare workers,” he added.

Governor Oborevwori commended Pastor Agidigbo for his comprehensive approach in not just constructing the building but also equipping it with modern necessities, such as ventilators and patient monitoring systems. “Your dedication is a testament to true altruism and a determination to support the public good,” he remarked.

The governor emphasized the collaborative effort needed in providing essential infrastructure, stating that the responsibility should not rest solely on the government. He called for other organizations and individuals to follow this example and contribute to the welfare of the community.

Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, the Commissioner for Health, voiced support for initiatives encouraging public-private partnerships in healthcare. Reading a statement on his behalf, Dr. Paul Oweh, Chairman of the Hospital Management Board, emphasized that the government’s role is to create an environment conducive to such collaborations in the quest for quality and affordable healthcare for the people of Delta State.

Pastor Chuks Agidigbo shared his inspiration for the donation, noting the essential role of private sector involvement in bolstering government efforts in healthcare and beyond. He recognized the shortcomings in infrastructure exposed by the pandemic and expressed his hope that more initiatives like this would emerge, potentially saving the government substantial expenses while addressing crucial healthcare needs.

The event also welcomed various officials and community leaders who commended Pastor Agidigbo’s significant contribution to enhancing the state’s healthcare system. Notable attendees included Senator Ned Nwoko, and representatives from various sectors, all of whom expressed their gratitude for the impactful donation.

Delta Community Land Dispute: SSPTI Challenges Okpanam’s Claims of Ownership

By Sunday Apah

The South-South Professional & Transparency Initiatives (SSPTI) is cautioning the public against engaging in any land transactions involving the Okpanam community in Oshimili North Local Government Area, asserting that the disputed land rightfully belongs to the Issele-Azagba people from the Aniocha North Council Area of Delta State.

In a statement released in Warri, the organization shared insights from its investigation into the ongoing land dispute, highlighting the recent public outcry following the tragic killings of three young individuals and two police officers three years prior.

The SSPTI indicated that a small faction of Okpanam locals appears to be responsible for the unrest affecting the region.

SSPTI representatives, Dr. Ugochukwu Alozie (Chairman) and Engr. Kayode Ayomide (Secretary), criticized attempts by some members of the Okpanam community to discredit a law-abiding businessman, Chinedu Okeke, also known as “Ekwe Ogidi.”

They argued that the Okpanam proponents have not substantiated their ownership claims against the Issele-Azagba community.

The group also brought to light concerns regarding certain senior police officials in Delta State, particularly recent appointees to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), who allegedly collaborate with criminal elements in Okpanam to exacerbate tensions.

According to SSPTI, these officers have been known to influence successive Commissioners of Police to side with them, thereby oppressing the Issele-Azagba community.

The SSPTI expressed gratitude to Inspector General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun for assigning the case to Deputy Inspector General of Police Sylvester Abiodun Alabi and voiced confidence in his investigative capabilities.

They urged Okpanam community members to come forward with their statements to the police, which had been requested two months ago.

In part, the statement read: “Our group has become aware of the ongoing land conflict between the Issele-Azagba and Okpanam communities, which has resulted in the loss of five lives and significant property destruction, amounting to millions of Naira.”

“As an organization committed to promoting transparency regarding issues affecting public safety in the Niger Delta, we conducted an independent investigation into the land disagreement to uncover the truth and help put an end to the unnecessary violence and property damage affecting law-abiding citizens.”

The findings indicated that, contrary to claims of land grabbing by certain individuals from Okpanam, including one Chiedu Ofuani, the situation involves encroachment by a few individuals against the Issele-Azagba community, who have convincingly demonstrated their rightful ownership.

The investigation uncovered a valid Consent Judgment issued by the High Court of Justice in Issele-Uku on June 19, 2012, confirming the Issele-Azagba people’s ownership claims. This judgment was supported by representatives from both communities and remains uncontested.

Additionally, the Issele-Azagba community possesses a legally binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Okpanam community that recognizes their ownership of the disputed land, as well as an established survey plan clearly outlining the boundaries of both communities.

In contrast, the Okpanam community has only presented an Enrollment of Ruling from the same High Court, which allows them to access the land for surveying but does not invalidate the existing Consent Judgment favoring the Issele-Azagba people.

Furthermore, the investigation revealed that Chinedu Okeke, whom the Okpanam community labeled a land grabber, is a legitimate business owner.

He acquired approximately 85 acres of land from the Issele-Azagba community, fulfilling all financial obligations and conducting thorough due diligence regarding the land’s rightful ownership.

The SSPTI expressed concern regarding certain high-ranking police officials who have operated through multiple police administrations, as some seem to support criminal elements in Okpanam with the aim of suppressing the Issele-Azagba community’s rights.

The group commended the Inspector General of Police for entrusting the investigation to DIG Sylvester Abiodun Alabi but also noted that some members of the Okpanam community have refrained from going to Abuja to present their statements, despite the two-month timeline since investigations began.

Concluding their statement, SSPTI urged the public to avoid dealings with the Okpanam community concerning the disputed land, citing their desperation to exploit individuals and their lack of legitimate ownership claims.

He reaffirmed the group’s commitment to supporting the governor in his efforts towards comprehensive development in Isoko land and commended initiatives such as the establishment of the College of Health Technology at Ovrode and the College of Health Sciences at the University of Science and Technology, Ozoro.

Why Court Blocks CBN from Disbursing Funds to Rivers State Government

By Sunday Apah

On Wednesday, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja issued an order prohibiting the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from continuing to release monthly financial allocations to the Rivers State Government.

The judge emphasized that Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s presentation of the 2024 budget before a four-member House of Assembly was a violation of constitutional protocols. She characterized the acceptance and distribution of monthly allocations by Fubara since January as a severe breach of constitutional norms that should not persist.

In addition, Justice Abdulmalik noted that Fubara’s implementation of an unlawful budget constituted significant violations of the 1999 Constitution, which he vowed to uphold.

The court also directed the CBN, the Accountant General of the Federation, Zenith Bank, and Access Bank to refrain from permitting Fubara to access funds from the Consolidated Revenue and Federation Account.

EDEN Pledges Commitment to Environmental Advocacy, Opens Delta Office

By Sunday Apah

The Environmental Defenders Network (EDEN), a non-governmental organization, is taking a stand against environmental challenges such as oil spills and plastic pollution in the Niger Delta region.

Mr. Maimoni Mariere Ubrei-Joe, the Director of Climate and Energy Justice for EDEN, made this known during the inauguration of the organization’s new office on Edoge Street in Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State.

He emphasized that the opening of the office aims to enhance environmental monitoring efforts throughout Delta State and underscores EDEN’s dedication to advocating for environmental protection.

Ubrei-Joe noted, “Several oil-producing communities have faced pollution issues, often going unreported. A recent incident in the Britannia-U area of Focadus exemplifies this problem, and we were instrumental in alerting the relevant authorities to the spill.”

He stressed the importance of taking legal frameworks and international treaties seriously for effective environmental stewardship.

He pointed out that while Nigeria has regulations, including the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NODSRA) and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), many of these laws fall short in holding companies accountable.

“The lack of effective enforcement has resulted in ongoing pollution with minimal repercussions for violators.

“Unfortunately, local communities sometimes refrain from reporting spills, often influenced by financial incentives from oil companies.

“This is why EDEN is dedicated to exposing environmental hazards and ensuring accountability among operators in the region.”

In addition to addressing oil spills, Ubrei-Joe highlighted that EDEN will also tackle issues such as plastic pollution, illegal logging, deforestation, dredging, and coastal erosion, particularly those exacerbated by climate change.

“While the oil and gas sector poses significant challenges in the Niger Delta, plastic waste is also a critical environmental concern that we will address in partnership with CODAF through our zero waste initiatives.”

Comrade Alagoa Morris, the Deputy Director of EDEN, also spoke at the event, stating that “EDEN is committed to promoting environmental sustainability and protecting human rights.

“We aim to support our communities by amplifying their voices and gathering data to ensure prompt responses from the appropriate authorities regarding environmental issues.”

He added, “We welcome collaboration with all stakeholders, including government bodies, communities, and civil society organizations, to draw global attention to the environmental challenges facing the Niger Delta region.”

Delta Hospitals Overcoming ‘Japa’ Syndrome Due to Better Wages for Health Workers, Says Onojaeme

By Sunday Apah
Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, Delta State’s Commissioner for Health, on Tuesday stated that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is tackling the ‘Japa’ syndrome in state-owned hospitals through a comprehensive strategy.
In response to a recent newspaper article entitled “‘Japa’ Sweeps Nigeria’s Hospitals,” Onojaeme emphasized that to attract more health professionals, the Delta State Government offers salaries that surpass those provided by the Federal Government and other states.
Onojaeme highlighted that Delta State adheres to the revised Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and does not tax the allowances of medical doctors.
He also mentioned that Governor Oborevwori has authorized the immediate replacement of any medical staff who leave the country for better opportunities.
This initiative aims to streamline the recruitment process, circumventing the delays often associated with standard public service protocols.
“Only Delta State and the Federal Government offer the revised CONMESS to medical professionals.
“Onojaeme stated. “Governor Oborevwori is committed to encouraging medical and health workers to remain in Nigeria to serve the nation.”
He added, “While addressing salary concerns, the governor is also focused on improving infrastructure, equipment, and overall working conditions for healthcare providers.”
Evidence of this commitment can be seen in the recent approval for the purchase of CT scanners at both the Delta State University Teaching Hospital in Oghara and the Central Hospital in Warri.
He added that the state government is undertaking a comprehensive rehabilitation of several hospitals and health centers across Delta to ensure a better working environment for both health workers and patients, Onojaeme concluded.
