By Sunday Apah

The Delta State Police Command has apprehended a 50-year-old man, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, following allegations of sexually defiling a four-year-old girl in Ubulu-Uku, located in the Aniocha South Local Government Area of the state.

According to reports, the incident took place on Thursday when the child was sent to her grandmother’s house by her mother.

Human rights activist Mr. Harrison Gwamnishu confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody on Friday.

“Upon receiving a report of the assault on the four-year-old, we acted swiftly,” Gwamnishu stated.

“We first transported the child to a government hospital for examination, where medical professionals confirmed signs of trauma consistent with penetration. Afterward, we located and arrested the suspect, allowing the girl to identify him as the victim.”

Gwamnishu added, “The suspect has been handed over to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ogwashi Uku, where he is currently detained.

He will be transferred to the State Police headquarters once preliminary investigations are completed.”

In a video shared by Gwamnishu, the child’s mother recounted her experience, stating, “I had gone to church for a fasting and prayer session and instructed my daughter to visit her grandmother after school.

When I returned, I checked in on her. She told me something was wrong, saying, ‘My bum is hurting.’”

The child’s mother expressed her anguish, stating, “I was devastated but hesitant to confront him directly. Instead, I vented my frustration and then reported the incident to my uncle the next day.”

Following her uncle’s advice, she approached the police in Ubulu-Uku. “They instructed me to take my daughter to the hospital for a medical examination, where it was confirmed that there was penetration on virginia”.

On Saturday, Police Public Relations Officer SP Edafe Bright confirmed the details of the case and the suspect’s arrest. “Yes, the situation has been confirmed,” he stated.

She continued, “I looked to see what was wrong and noticed signs of sexual assault. When I asked her who had harmed her, she described a neighbor with an injury on his leg.”

How Lion Killed 35-Year-Old Zookeeper In Obasanjo Library

By Sunday Apah

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of a 35-year-old zoo employee, Babaji Daule, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, following a lion attack on Saturday.

Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the police, provided details in a statement released to the press.

Daule, originally from Bauchi State, was reportedly careless in securing the lion’s enclosure before attempting to feed the animal.

This oversight allowed the lion to escape and fatally attack him, inflicting severe injuries to his neck.

Authorities have since transported Daule’s body to the mortuary at Ijaye General Hospital.

In a subsequent effort to prevent further harm, the lion was shot by park personnel.

The incident was reported by the Area Commander Metro on September 28, 2024, at approximately 7:40 AM,” Odutola explained.

The Chief Security Officer of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library informed the Divisional Police Officer about the loss of Babaji Daule, a trained lion handler working at the zoo.

The police spokesperson elaborated that the incident stemmed from Daule’s failure to properly secure the enclosure before feeding the lion, resulting in the tragic attack.

In a statement released by the zoo’s management, they noted that the incident occurred after park hours when some late-arriving guests requested a demonstration of the lion feeding routine.

Feeling confident, the zookeeper left the safety gate open while feeding the animal, which led to the fatal attack.

To prevent further desecration of the body, park personnel acted quickly and euthanized the lion.

The management emphasized that this incident deviated from the park’s standard feeding procedures and has initiated an internal investigation, which has been reported to the police for further inquiry.

The Commissioner for Works, Charles Aniagwu, further detailed progress on projects, including the Okirighwre-Benin Road, for which contracts have been awarded, with an expected completion date of May next year.

“We envision a state where everyone works together, regardless of political differences,” Aniagwu stated. “Governor Oborevwori understands the developmental needs of Sapele. We have already contracted over 15 kilometers of internal road construction and provided up to 40 percent mobilization to contractors to expedite the work.”

He assured attendees that Sapele is on the path to significant improvement. “Once these projects are completed, Sapele will surpass its previous stature.

“Our aim is to create an environment where businesses can thrive, ultimately boosting employment opportunities.”

“We are enhancing connectivity among communities, including fast-tracking the Ughelli-Asaba Expressway project.”

Addressing security and development concerns, Aniagwu urged community leaders to engage with residents about the importance of peace and security for attracting investment and development.

Professor Sam Oyovbaire, the event’s chairman, praised Professor Hope Eghagha for initiating the Sapele renaissance and encouraged residents to work together for the city’s revitalization.

Delta State Government Urges Contractors to Ensure Timely, Quality Project Completion

By Sunday Apah

In a push for enhanced efficiency, the Delta State Government has mobilized contractors working on various projects throughout the state, urging them to prioritize timely and high-quality delivery.

On Friday, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), Mr. Charles Aniagwu, made this appeal during a project inspection in Orerokpe, located within the Okpe Local Government Area.

He addressed reporters following his review of several projects, including the newly awarded Benin Road, Old Amukpe Road with a spur to Ayemidejor Close in Sapele, Oviri-Okpe – Orerokpe Road, and Ezesi Road in Orerokpe.

Accompanied by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Engr. Gabriel Fuludu, and Director of Rural Roads, Engr. Solomon Aghagba, Aniagwu revealed that contractors have received mobilization payments of between 30 to 40 percent of the contract sums.

This initiative aims to enable swift project execution amid economic price fluctuations.

He emphasized the necessity for contractors to deliver superior projects, ensuring that residents receive commensurate value for their investments.

“As we hand over these sites to the contractors, we urge them to prioritize quality work and efficiency,” Aniagwu remarked. “We will not compromise on these two crucial aspects. The governor expects the resources of Deltans to effectively serve their needs.”

Highlighting the importance of expedience in project completion, he added, “We need speed due to the economic fluctuations; contractors should not delay after receiving their award letters while waiting for price variations. We will not tolerate such delays.”

The commissioner noted that prompt action is imperative, stating, “While we emphasize speed, we will not sacrifice quality for haste. We stress the importance of quick progress without compromising on standards.”

During the inspection, Aniagwu discussed the construction of 15 km of roads in Sapele, with 13.7 km directly supervised by the government. He reiterated the administration’s commitment to award contracts based on technical qualifications rather than connections.

Regarding the Benin Road project in Sapele, he mentioned that two significant structures would need to be demolished, but the state government plans to compensate the owners.

“Although those buildings were improperly placed along the right of way, we choose to act humanely by offering compensation,” he stated. “Our aim is to avoid causing hardship to residents during this difficult period.”

Concerning the 15.75 km Oviri-Okpe – Orerokpe Road, Aniagwu praised the contractor for their swift and quality work, especially in addressing failing portions of the road to ensure a smoother experience for commuters during construction.

Ned Nwoko Should Apologize to Governor Oborevwori for His Recent Comments – Edijala

By Sunday Apah

Raymond Edijala, the Executive Assistant to the Governor of Delta State for Project Monitoring, has called on Senator Ned Nwoko to issue a sincere apology to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori regarding his recent comments.

In his statement, Edijala emphasized that as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Nwoko should engage directly with the governor on pertinent issues rather than resorting to the press.

He noted that while Delta State receives the highest federal allocation, this does not imply that the governor can accept every proposal without thorough planning.

“The Governor made it clear in his inaugural address that he would prioritize developments in Warri and its surrounding areas.

“This commitment is evident in the ongoing construction of overhead bridges and the redesign of the Warri Stadium,” Edijala said.

He added, “The Okpai Power Project is a federal initiative that requires careful handling; it is not as straightforward as Senator Nwoko seems to believe.

“It’s essential for the governor to concentrate on matters that directly affect the people of Delta State.”

Edijala expressed respect for Nwoko, especially considering that he is the sole senator from the state within the ruling party, and highlighted the importance of collaboration between the senator and the governor.

“I believe it is premature to raise concerns about the marginalization of Anioma at this time. Governance is a continuous process, and I commend the Governor for diligently working to complete the projects initiated by the previous administration,” he stated.

“To my Senator Ned Nwoko, your position carries significant responsibilities, and the recent video incident undermines that role.

“In the spirit of reconciliation and progress, it is therefore appropriate for the Governor of Delta State to expect an apology from you,” he concluded.
