Bilabiri 1 Community Leaders Refute Allegations of Dethronement

By Sunday Apah

The leaders of the Bilabiri 1 community in the Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have unequivocally refuted an online publication claiming that they have been dethroned from their leadership positions.

The online publication, made recently by Mr. Lucky Tubotu Dereateidei, alleged that they were forcefully removed from their roles.

In a statement signed by Chiefs Peter Pinne, Kingsley Joseph, Amos Allison, and David Okuru, the leaders asserted that there was no truth to the claims made in the publication.

They clarified that the late Mr. Frank B. Seide, whose death was cited as a reason for their alleged dethronement, died during a community crisis on April 1, 2021.

“The matter was resolved long ago, and even the Bayelsa State Government is aware that it was settled at Gbaramatu Kingdom in Delta State, in the presence of High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, a.k.a. Tompolo.

“The late Frank Seide was buried with the assistance of the Bayelsa State Government.”

They noted in the statement that Mr. Lucky Tubotu has been banned from entering the Bilabiri 1 community.

“If Mr. Dereateidei is dissatisfied with how High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo handled the situation, he should address his concerns directly with him,” it added.

The community leaders are calling on security agencies to take action against Mr. Lucky Tubotu Dereateidei for causing unrest in Bilabiri 1.

Governor Oborevwori Plans Town Hall Meetings to Engage Deltans

By Sunday Apah

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, announced on Wednesday his intention to conduct town hall meetings across various local government areas in the state as part of his administration’s commitment to connect with the community.

The Governor outlined plans to allocate a minimum of N1 billion for road construction in each local government area as part of the 2024 budget, ensuring that all regions benefit from significant infrastructure development.

During a courtesy visit from the State Executive of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), led by Rev. Lucky Osagbakhoe, Governor Oborevwori expressed his appreciation for their visit, highlighting the strong collaboration between the government and faith-based organizations in Delta State.

He commended religious leaders for their unwavering support and prayers, noting, “The dedication of the Church has been a stabilizing influence on the government of Delta State.”

In response to calls for town hall gatherings, the Governor stated, “We recognize the importance of engaging with our local communities and are dedicated to showcasing the numerous projects underway.

Each local government will see at least N1 billion allocated to road construction in our upcoming budget.”

Addressing concerns regarding the rising cost of living, Oborevwori highlighted recent empowerment initiatives, including the distribution of MORE grants to 5,000 individuals and agricultural inputs to over 6,000 residents in recent weeks.

“The challenges we currently face are not unique to Delta State. However, when we compare our efforts with those of other states, it’s clear we are committed to making a significant impact,” he remarked, referencing the recent protests against poor governance to emphasize the necessity of dialogue over conflict.

“I encourage you to keep both the national and local governments in your prayers, as guidance is essential for effective governance,” he added.

Rev. Lucky Osagbakhoe, the State Chairman of CAN, congratulated Governor Oborevwori on his recent electoral victories and praised the organization’s long-standing contributions to peace and development in Delta State.

He expressed confidence that CAN would continue to foster unity within the Christian community, emphasizing the importance of town hall meetings in the three senatorial districts to better gauge the sentiments of the populace.

“We appreciate your administration’s efforts in urban renewal, particularly through infrastructure development, and encourage you to maintain this positive trajectory,” he concluded.

Ogbotobo Federated Communities Decries SPDC Marginalization

By Sunday Apah

The people of Ogbotobo Federated Communities in Ekeremo Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have called on Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) to urgently address their demands regarding critical development issues affecting their communities.

In a letter addressed to the Manager of Corporate Relations for Projects and Opportunities at SPDC, the community leaders—Comrade Solomon Akuna, CDC Chairman of Ogbotobo Community; HRH Chidiwei Timipre Roland, Amananawei of Ogbotobo Community; Mr. China Custom, CDC Chairman of Agbaya-Ama Community; and Chief Pereyibo Clark, Ag. Amananawei of Agbaya-Ama Community—emphasized the urgent need for SPDC to address the marginalization of their communities in order to maintain existing peace between the parties.

The letter highlighted several concerns, including the denial of entitlements related to the SPDC Scholarship Scheme, the company’s operations in their environment without a Flow Through Order (FTO), issues surrounding the Community Electrification Project, the abandonment of the Shore Protection Project, and unmet financial obligations from the Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) and the Top-up Fund for the two expiring rigs in 2022-2023.

According to the letter, “The leadership of Ogbotobo Federated Communities (Ogbotobo, Agbaya-Ama, Tonton-Ama, and Tonor) wishes to draw the attention of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) Nigeria Limited to its marginalization and exploitation of our communities, urging that bold steps be taken to address the issues outlined in a timely manner.”

The letter further stated, “Our parents and guardians face significant difficulties in securing scholarships from SPDC. Therefore, we urge SPDC to change their policies to allow all selected individuals in our communities to benefit unconditionally from the scholarship program.”

The community leaders made it clear that if any of SPDC’s contractors fail to comply with requirements, they would halt operations until a resolution is reached. “If any of your vendors are found wanting, regardless of their urgency, we will put a stop to their operations without an FTO, with costs incurred during this process to be represented later,” they warned.

The letter also called for improved coordination on community development projects. “It is frustrating when community development projects lack coordination. We urge SPDC to prompt the contractor in charge of the electrification project to expedite the lighting of our communities, or we may be compelled to act.”

Regarding the Shore Protection Project, the community leaders requested that SPDC consider the project, which was meant to be completed between 2000 and 2001, if the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with SPDC remains valid.

Additionally, they recalled a mutual agreement made in August 2019, where a yearly mandate of ₦150,000,000.00 was established with SPDC representatives in the presence of state government officials. “We expect SPDC to uphold our cordial relationship,” they insisted.

The communities are also expecting a Top-up Fund from two drilling rigs that operated from August 2022 to June 2023. “We believe that the projects undertaken exceed the GMoU-specified amounts that qualify for the Top-up Fund, and we urge SPDC to act promptly on this matter.”

In conclusion, the letter emphasized the importance of maintaining the peaceful coexistence established since 1979. “You cannot beat a child and tell him not to cry. Enough of this marginalization. We stand united as indigenous communities in the Niger Delta region. We seek recognition from SPDC, not continued exploitation and marginalization of the host communities.”

Commitment to People-Focused Projects Emphasized by Delta’s Works Commissioner

By Sunday Apah

Delta State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, has reaffirmed Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s strong dedication to implementing people-centered projects that benefit citizens and residents alike.

Izeze made these remarks to reporters following an inspection of various ongoing projects in Warri and Ughelli on Monday.

Among the sites visited were improvements and flood control measures surrounding Warri Central Hospital Road, Edo Guest House Road in Ekpan, and several troubled sections of roads in Ughelli.

During his inspection at Warri Central Hospital Road, the Commissioner instructed contractors to replace 8mm rods with the specified 10mm rods as outlined in the Bill of Engineering Measurement and Evaluation (BEME).

He emphasized that the Oborevwori administration maintains a strict zero tolerance policy for substandard work and plans to conduct an unannounced follow-up visit to ensure compliance.

On the Edo Guest House Road, Izeze commended the contractor for effective flood management improvements that have alleviated long-standing issues for residents.

Speaking specifically about Warri Central Hospital Road, he noted, “During our inspection, we discovered that the contractor attempted to cut corners by using 8mm reinforcement rods instead of the 10mm specified in the Bill of Quantities.

We detected this discrepancy using our vernier caliper, and it had already been brought to their attention by the site engineer.

Izeze continued, “My personal visit today was to assure that those rods are replaced, and I intend to return without prior notice to verify that this has been addressed. Our primary goal is to ensure that Deltans receive value for their investment. Governor Oborevwori has consistently insisted that no project should be certified unless it meets the agreed-upon standards.”

While inspecting Edo Street in Ughelli, Izeze expressed gratitude to the Governor for approving a road project designed to alleviate traffic congestion at the Otovwodo junction.

He stated, “The stone base has been completed, and we are now awaiting stabilization before the concrete pavement begins. We will return to ensure that contractors meet the required specifications.”

Reflecting on the improvements at Edo Guest House Road, Izeze noted the significant change in residents’ sentiments. “In the past, this road faced flooding, which caused community frustrations.

Today, the same residents express their gratitude to Governor Oborevwori for addressing this critical issue. This is the essence of governance—fulfilling the people’s needs.”

He asserted, “The well-being and security of citizens are fundamental to governance, as outlined in our Constitution. I can state confidently that the Oborevwori administration is fully committed to delivering projects that prioritize the community’s needs.”

Izeze concluded his inspections by recognizing Obakpor Engineering for their swift response to repairs on the failing ECN Road and urged residents of Okogbe Road in Ughelli to maintain their environment by desilting drains and avoiding waste disposal into newly constructed drainage systems.

“The community must take responsibility for sanitation. While the government provides infrastructure, residents have a civic duty to protect it. I want to assure the Governor that his second term is secure as long as the community works to support government efforts.”

Delta State Government Takes Action to Repair Collapsed Asaba-Ase Bridge

By Sunday Apah

The Delta State Government has pledged to tackle the issues resulting from the collapse of a wooden bridge that connects the Uzere community in the Isoko South Local Government Area to Asaba-Ase in Ndokwa East Local Government Area.

During an inspection of the damaged bridge, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), reaffirmed Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s commitment to improving connectivity through the construction of bridges and roads.

“Upon learning about the bridge’s collapse, Governor Oborevwori directed me to assess the damage firsthand,” stated Aniagwu.

“We need to determine immediate solutions before undertaking complete reconstruction so that residents of Isoko South and Ndokwa East can resume travel through this route.”

He noted the bridge’s importance, explaining that for years, it facilitated transportation between Asaba-Ase and Uzere. “Given that Delta is a coastal state, we are continually working on bridge projects across the region,” he added.

Accompanied by Chief Emamusi Obiodeh, the Commissioner for Lands, Surveys, and Urban Development, and Sir Festus Ahon, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Aniagwu also inspected various road projects in Isoko North and Isoko South, urging contractors to prioritize timely and high-quality work.

At the Emevor-Orogun road project phase two, he commended Emo Rock Concept for their efficient and quality workmanship, stating that the contractor’s past performance on phase one warranted their continued involvement.

The team also visited the severely neglected 5.7 km Igbide-Olomoro road, which was handed over to a contractor for reconstruction. Aniagwu expressed that the road had long been a concern for residents and highlighted the thorough evaluation of their request for repairs.

“We recognized the need for improvement on this existing road, as it has deteriorated significantly, complicating travel for local residents,” he explained.

“We are determined to ensure this project is awarded to a capable contractor who can execute the work to the highest standards.”

He emphasized the importance of keeping project costs stable from awarding through completion, noting the potential for fluctuating prices.

“By providing mobilization support to contractors, we expect them to fully commit to their projects,” he said.

Aniagwu assured that while they encourage speed, the quality of work remains paramount. “We will consistently monitor contractors to ensure both speed and quality are maintained throughout the project.”

Chief Emamusi Obiodeh expressed gratitude to the Governor for promptly addressing the reconstruction of the Igbide-Olomoro road, a concern for the community for over two decades.

“We appreciate the Governor’s swift response to our needs, marking a significant step forward for the people of Igbide and the entire Isoko community. We are committed to supporting the contractor to ensure the successful completion of this much-needed project, he said.
