Manchester United FC Finally Sack Erik Ten Hag

Manchester United FC Finally Sack Erik Ten Hag

By Sunday Apah

The Red Devils announced in an official statement that the manager had been relieved of his duties on Monday following the dismal defeat at the London Stadium, their fourth loss in nine Premier League games.

The statement read: “Erik Ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”

United have made their worst-ever start to a Premier League season, with Sunday’s defeat by West Ham leaving them 14th in the Premier League table after nine games. They have also failed to win any of their three Europa League games, drawing against Twente, Porto and Fenerbahce.

Ten Hag was in serious danger of losing his job late last season as United came eighth in the Premier League, their worst finish since 1990. The club spoke to numerous candidates including Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna and Thomas Tuchel but Ten Hag eventually clung on and was given a one-year extension of his contract. It means that United are likely to have to pay an estimated £7 million in compensation to Ten Hag, which could have been avoided in the summer.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach while United look to recruit a permanent successor to Ten Hag. The legendary ex-Red Devils striker will lead the team in Wednesday’s game at home to Leicester City in the Carabao Cup.

The Pointer @30: Governor Oborevwori Urges Media Professionals To Foster National Unity Through Their Work

By Sunday Apah

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, emphasized the vital role of the media in Nigeria’s democracy during his address at the 30th anniversary celebration of The Pointer newspaper in Asaba.

He encouraged media professionals to commit to accurate and balanced reporting, as well as to foster national unity through their work.

At the event, themed “Honoring Truth and Unity Through Excellence in Public Communication,” Oborevwori received The Pointer’s “Exemplary Democrat and Transformational Leadership Award.”

He highlighted the necessity for the media to engage in responsible discourse while holding public officials accountable, as dictated by the Constitution.

The Governor urged journalists to focus on news that promotes peace and cohesion, steering clear of content that may deepen religious and ethnic divides.

Reflecting on the newspaper’s 30-year journey, he said: “The Pointer has successfully navigated the complexities of print journalism, fulfilling its roles in information, education, and entertainment. It has also served as a valuable partner to the Delta State Government, advocating for unity and peace.”

He praised The Pointer for maintaining strong editorial standards and a professional layout, noting that many former journalists from the paper have gone on to serve in significant government positions.

However, Oborevwori acknowledged the challenges facing the publication, including declining circulation and limited advertising revenue, alongside a weak online presence.

“After three decades, it should strive for financial independence rather than continued reliance on government support,” he stated.

He urged the newspaper’s management to reassess their operations to enhance sustainability and profitability. “In the current digital age, there is no reason why The Pointer cannot establish a robust online presence,” he added.

The Governor commended the board, led by Ebenezer Okorodudu, for initiatives aimed at revitalizing the paper and encouraged them to develop targeted products to increase revenue.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency and collaboration with the press, urging journalists to verify their information for accuracy and fairness.

Former Minister of Information, Prof. Sam Oyavbaire, praised The Pointer as a leading state-owned publication and urged its team to intensify efforts in promoting state initiatives, emphasizing the importance of ongoing staff training.

State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, noted the newspaper’s success in fulfilling its information dissemination mandate and called on the Governor to increase print runs due to sustained demand.

In his welcome address, Olorogun Ebenezer Okorodudu highlighted The Pointer’s dedication to providing accurate information for its readership across various platforms. He also mentioned that 20% of the newspaper’s revenue is allocated for staff training and development, reinforcing its commitment to truth, unity, and the implementation of the State Governor’s MORE Agenda.

Universities Face Closure as Non-Academic Staff Declare Indefinite Strike Following Minister’s Resignation

By Sunday Apah

The Joint Action Committee, representing the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, has announced an indefinite strike set to begin today, resulting in the shutdown of university activities nationwide.

In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi, the unions expressed dissatisfaction, citing that their ultimatum to the Federal Government regarding unpaid salaries had lapsed at midnight.

The unions are demanding the payment of four months’ withheld salaries, enhanced remuneration, earned allowances, and the enforcement of 2009 agreements made with the government.

In 2022, the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Labour and Employment, enacted the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy in response to an extended strike by four university-based unions.

Last October, President Bola Tinubu approved the payment of four out of eight months of withheld salaries for academic staff, which was eventually processed in February. However, non-teaching staff were left in uncertainty regarding their own withheld salaries, leading to perceptions of unfair treatment.

Despite numerous protests, ultimatums, and warning strikes, the unions continue to face delays, with no resolution in sight regarding back pay. The latest statement urges all state-owned universities to align local demands with the ongoing strike.

The unions declared, “Compliance with this directive is mandatory for all NASU and SSANU branches in both Federal and State-owned universities, as well as Inter-University Centres.”

The memorandum referenced the previous circular dated October 21, 2024, which required the Federal Government to address the outstanding salary concerns by October 27. In a Peaceful Protest held on July 18, 2024, the unions provided a final 10-day warning to the government to act or face a full shutdown of university operations.

Both unions expressed exasperation at the government’s failure to respond positively to their demands. They emphasized their extensive patience and willingness to resolve the matter through dialogue, which has unfortunately yielded no results.

The strike is set to affect essential campus operations, as SSANU members handle critical services such as water, electricity, and security. SSANU President Ibrahim indicated that if the government addresses their financial demands promptly, the strike may be reconsidered.

This development comes on the heels of the resignation of outgoing Minister of Education Professor Mamman Tahir, who was directed by President Tinubu to transition responsibilities to incoming Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa on Wednesday.

Attempts to obtain a statement from the Federal Ministry of Education regarding the unions’ industrial action were unsuccessful at the time of this report.

Earlier this year, the unions held a brief warning strike due to lack of response from the education ministry concerning their concerns. In July, they staged nationwide protests to draw attention to their plight. After a meeting in July, ministry representatives stated that the withheld salaries were under review at the highest levels of government.

Despite recent ultimatums and promises from President Tinubu for salary disbursements, the funds have yet to materialize, prompting further frustration among union members.

The unions acknowledge the President’s approval for salary payments, asserting that these decisions have not been executed by the relevant authorities.

“It is disheartening that, despite various approvals from the President, our members have not received the owed payments, indicating a disconnect between the government’s commitments and actions,” they said in a statement.

Delta State to Blacklist Contractors for Noncompliance as Minimum Wage Payments Begin

By Sunday Apah

Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has announced that his administration will take decisive action against contractors who fail to meet project specifications outlined in the Bill of Engineering Measurement and Evaluation. He declared that those who do not adhere to these standards will be blacklisted.

In addition, the governor confirmed the commencement of payments for the newly established minimum wage, emphasizing that the well-being of the state’s workforce is a top priority for his administration.

Governor Oborevwori made these statements on Sunday during the 70th birthday celebration of Chief (Mrs.) Roseline Amioku, Chairman of the Delta State Civil Service Commission, at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Osubi, Okpe Local Government Area.

He reassured attendees that his government would closely monitor ongoing projects throughout the state and urged contractors to uphold their responsibilities for the benefit of all Deltans. “Contractors who deliver subpar work will be blacklisted,” he affirmed.

“We are committed to providing quality projects for the people of Delta. We have not borrowed funds for the past 16 months and, God willing, we will continue this trend this year.”

On the topic of infrastructure development in Warri and its surrounding areas, the governor pledged to enhance facilities across the region while committing to address the needs of all sectors within the state.

He called for continued prayers from community leaders, stating the country is currently facing significant challenges. “To our Lord Bishop, your prayers are essential for our success. We are united in Delta State regardless of political affiliation. We must focus on moving the state forward,” he said.

Governor Oborevwori further stressed the importance of praying for President and government leaders during these tough times, noting that a majority of citizens in Delta depend on state governance for their livelihoods. He revealed that the state’s workforce exceeds 80,000 when accounting for local government employees and teachers.

Addressing the new minimum wage, he reassured that payments have started, and those who have yet to receive their salaries will do so beginning Monday. He also warned that employees residing abroad would no longer be on the payroll, calling it an unacceptable act.

In conclusion, the governor congratulated Chief Mrs. Amioku on her milestone birthday and acknowledged her impact on the Delta State Civil Service.

During the ceremony, the Most Rev. Anthony Ewherido, Catholic Bishop of Warri Diocese, delivered a homily titled “Do Not Lose Hope,” encouraging Nigerians to remain optimistic amid difficult times, assuring them that “the Lord will turn things around for good.”
