*Encourages Students to Embrace Learning

By Sunday Apah

On Thursday, the 1990 graduating class of Abbi Grammar School, known as the Unique Nobles 90 Association, generously donated educational materials valued at over one million naira to their former school and Abbi Comprehensive Girls Secondary School in Ndokwa West Local Government Area, Delta State.

This donation, which comprised textbooks, notebooks, chalk, and various learning materials, exemplifies the group’s dedication to enhancing education in their community.

During a formal presentation ceremony, Nobles 90 Chairman, Comrade Shedrack Onitsha addressed the students, underscoring the vital role that education plays in achieving success.

He asserted that education is not a “scam” as some may claim, saying, “Education is a powerful equalizer in society. We urge you to appreciate its significance as you shape your future.”

Notable members of the Abbi Grammar School Old-Students Association (AGOSA), including Barr. Nelson Okuzor and Sir Godsday Owetemu, attended the event and expressed their admiration for Nobles 90’s commitment to the school’s development.

They encouraged other graduating classes to engage in similar initiatives to help elevate the school.

Sir Godsday Owetemu, the home-based chairman of AGOSA, praised Nobles 90’s charitable actions and called on fellow alumni to emulate their example, highlighting the reality that “the government cannot fulfill all the educational needs of our schools.”

Accompanying the chairperson were other members of Nobles 90, including Vice Chair Ogbuefi Ibobo Godfrey, former Chair Mr. Samuel Obije, Assistant Secretary Mrs. Gladys Oshilimi, Assistant Financial Secretary Mr. Ugwu Ikechukwu, PRO Mr. Nelson Onyinobode, and members Mrs. Faith Owetem, Ineh Chukudi, and Ndidi Smart.

The donation featured the latest editions of Mathematics, English, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry textbooks for Senior Secondary School 3 and Junior Secondary School 3, along with branded notebooks and writing materials.

Additionally, thirty-five JSS3 students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds received individual copies of Mathematics and English textbooks to support their studies.

Reflecting on his own experiences at Abbi Grammar School, Onitsha remarked, “When we began in 1984, the resilience and determination we cultivated here empowered us to achieve success in various fields.

“Our class has produced two professors and numerous PhD holders, alongside many successful business owners and professionals.”

He encouraged the students to prioritize their education and recognize it as the cornerstone of future achievement.

The association also pledged ongoing support to students, including covering WAEC and JAMB fees for top performers to inspire academic excellence.

“Utilize the resources in the library and let your commitment to learning shine through,” Onitsha urged.

At Abbi Comprehensive Girls Secondary School, educational materials were presented to the top ten JSS3 students, and branded notebooks were distributed to JSS1 and JSS2 students.

Both school principals expressed their heartfelt gratitude. Mr. Monday Oshilim, Principal of Abbi Grammar School, praised the alumni for their generosity and stated, “It is truly inspiring that, years after graduation, this group continues to recognize the importance of supporting local education.

“These textbooks are invaluable to our students and the school library.”

Mr. Ogume Gabriel, Vice Principal of Abbi Comprehensive Girls Secondary School, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the vital role of alumni contributions in advancing education.

“We appreciate this exceptional association for reaching out to Abbi Girls and extending support to our school, despite their own educational roots in Abbi Grammar School.”

Both principals also called for increased support from both the government and alumni to provide essential resources like desks and perimeter fencing for the schools.

The event culminated with the official handover of textbooks to the school libraries, marking a significant milestone in enhancing learning resources for Abbi students.

Remedial Work Begins on Asaba-Onitsha Section of Benin-Onitsha Expressway

By Sunday Apah

Delta State’s Acting Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, expressed optimism on Thursday as remedial work commenced on the degraded section of the Benin-Onitsha Expressway, particularly affecting motorists on the Asaba-Onitsha route.

During an on-site inspection of the damaged road and surrounding areas in Asaba, which have been experiencing heavy traffic due to the road’s condition, Onyeme reported receiving assurances from the contractor that the first lane of the dual carriageway will be repaired to facilitate smoother traffic flow before the rainy season concludes.

The Acting Governor noted that the deterioration of internal roads in Asaba has been exacerbated by diverted traffic from the federal road, leading to plans for repairs on these routes as well.

“We have thoroughly assessed Nnebisi Road and Dennis Osadebay Way, as well as various failing sections along the Ibusa/Asaba road towards the Koka Interchange,” he stated.

“Measures are currently being taken to address some critical areas where a truck recently fell onto two smaller vehicles. We are documenting other affected spots, and our technical team will act swiftly to ensure repairs.”

Recognizing the historical significance of these roads, Onyeme remarked, “While contractors have previously done commendable work, our internal road network was not designed for the volume of heavy vehicles now using them due to issues with the federal road. We aim to rectify all damaged sections in Asaba effectively.”

He also expressed gratitude to federal authorities for mobilizing workers to address the major failures in the expressway, emphasizing, “This initiative will alleviate pressure on our local roads. I am confident that in the coming days, the issues related to these damaged areas will be resolved.”

In response to calls for restricting heavy vehicles on internal roads, the Acting Governor stressed the challenges of enforcing such measures.

“We will continue to advocate for improvements as a state, but there are limits to our capabilities. Many truck drivers are residents of Delta State, and if the expressway is compromised, they will inevitably seek alternative routes, which could have broader economic implications.”

Accompanying Onyeme on the inspection tour were several key officials, including the Commissioner for Works (Urban Roads), Hon. Reuben Izeze, Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, and Chief Patrick Ukah of the Asaba Capital Territory Development Agency.

Music Knows No Boundaries, Says Onyeme, Delta State Acting Governor

By Sunday Apah

The Acting Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, recently emphasized that music serves as a universal language capable of bridging cultural and linguistic divides.

Speaking on Wednesday at the International Festival for Choral and Traditional Music in Asaba, Onyeme highlighted music’s ability to connect individuals from varied backgrounds and unite them for a common purpose.

“It is fitting that Asaba has been chosen to host this year’s event in Nigeria,” he stated. “Delta State is a vibrant center for music and entertainment, boasting a rich legacy of talented artists.

“For our international guests, it’s worth noting that renowned musicians such as Edna Ogholi, Harrysong, Omawumi, and the late Ras Kimono hail from this state.”

He further mentioned prominent gospel artists like Samsong and the late Sammie Okposo, and reminded attendees of the Delta State government’s annual Praise and Thanksgiving Day on May 29, celebrating the blessings and faithfulness of God towards the community.

Onyeme praised the festival’s mission to foster friendship, mutual respect, and understanding among Africans, while also raising awareness of cultural heritage and promoting education through the arts—especially for the continent’s youth.

He emphasized the importance of uplifting African youths amidst challenges such as poverty, disease, and societal vices.

Additionally, he noted that Asaba has become a preferred location for conferences, sporting events, and other significant international gatherings.

Dr. Daniel Okoh, General Superintendent of Christ Holy Church International and President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, who served as the festival’s patron, spoke earlier about the need for African unity.

“We must use choral music to convey that we need one another and to assert our roles as champions of peace across the continent,” he remarked.

The festival also included a special tribute in the form of an award presented to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in recognition of his support for Christian-related events. Various choral and cultural ensembles from across Africa graced the occasion with their performances.

Tension in Delta as Community Issues 21-Day Ultimatum to NEPL to Commence Construction of Abura Flow Station

By Sunday Apah

Emadadja community in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State has issued a 21-day ultimatum to NNPC Exploration and Production Limited (NEPL) to commence construction of the flow station at Abura or prepare to vacate the area.

This decision was communicated in a letter addressed to the Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), signed by Ambassador Festus Oshemughen and Comrade Christopher Origbo, the President General and Secretary General of Emadadja community, respectively.

In the letter, community representatives stated, “It has been a long time since oil operations began in Emadadja Community.

“Throughout this period, the oil extracted here has been routed to Otu-Jeremi in Ughelli South LGA.

“Despite numerous efforts to establish a proposed flow station to assess production capacity over the years, these attempts have proven unsuccessful, leading to concerns that our benefits are being undermined.

“After much discussion, it was agreed that the flow station should be built as soon as possible; however, we have seen no progress to date.”

The letter further emphasized, “In light of these concerns, a community assembly meeting was convened, attended by all Executive Committee members, youth, women, and elders.

“Key issues contributing to the delay in constructing the flow station were discussed, and we found them deeply troubling.”

The community expressed their frustration regarding “the hardship and underdevelopment faced by our residents amidst abundant resources.

“We have concluded that former NPDC, now NEPL, and their partners show little interest in the community’s development and the welfare of its people.

“Thus, we have resolved to give a 21-day ultimatum for immediate mobilization to the site for the construction of the flow station.

“We also demand the completion of all MoU projects that were agreed upon before the implementation of the PIA, as well as completion of the drilling processes for Wells 13 and 14, which have been abandoned.”

Also, they called on NNPC to urgently direct NEPL to revoke any contracts with the company currently engaged for the construction of the OML 65 flow station and ensure the proper management of the field.

The community representatives voiced their concerns regarding a joint venture partnership that occurred in London on August 3, 2022, stating that it holds no interest in developing phase 1 of the approved OML 65 project.

As a result, they do not accept any further operations from these companies in their community.

“This position must be taken seriously, or we cannot guarantee the security and safety of OML 65 oil exploration on our land,” they warned.

Copies of the letter have also been forwarded to the Governor of Delta State, the Commanding Officer of 63 Brigade in Asaba, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, the Managing Director of NEPL, the Executive Chairman of Udu LGA, and other relevant authorities.

CDHR Calls for Investigation into Alleged Land Grabbing in Delta State

By Sunday Apah

The Committee for Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has raised concerns over a scheme allegedly orchestrated by powerful individuals in Asaba, Delta State, aimed at unlawfully dispossessing Hajia Halima, a female landowner, of her property.

The organization is urging Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun to take immediate action to ensure justice in this matter.

The CDHR noted that, due to the influential connections of those involved, a case that should have remained within the jurisdiction of the Delta State Command has been moved to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The organization has requested the IGP to return the inquiry to the original local unit for proper handling.

In a statement signed by its National President, Comrade (Dr) Kehinde Prince Taiga, CDHR highlighted an alarming trend of land seizures using the authority of security agencies in Delta State and beyond.

The group asserted that it is crucial to address these injustices in the interest of the community.

Referencing multiple petitions submitted by Hajia Halima’s legal representatives, CDHR indicated that efforts to remove her from her property are ongoing, despite substantial evidence proving her ownership.

A notable instance cited involved the law firm OG Nwachukwu & Co., which, in a letter dated October 2, 2024, confirmed Hajia Halima’s legal purchase of land from Amachai Community, Delta State.

The statement revealed that after acquiring the property, Hajia Halima fulfilled all communal obligations, fenced the land, and constructed various facilities, including security structures and agricultural ponds.

However, on September 20, 2024, she received alarming news from her security guard that individuals had forcibly entered her property with bulldozers and were demolishing her structures, allegedly with police presence complicating the situation.

Taiga also referred to a protest by AL-JABBAAR & ASSOCIATES, representing Hajia Halima, which accused certain individuals of contempt of court and threatening her safety.

Alarmingly, it was revealed that one Amaechi Joseph Ayalogu, alongside CSP Ben Ayalogu, a member of the police force, had conspired to transfer the case to Abuja to hinder local proceedings.

In conclusion, CDHR is calling on IGP Egbetokun to facilitate a return of the case to Delta State and instruct the local police to conduct a comprehensive investigation before initiating court proceedings.

This approach would allow all parties to present their ownership documentation for fair adjudication in a competent court.

Gov Oborevwori’s Robust Infrastructural Budget for Delta’s 25 LGAs

Oplus_131072

By Sunday Apah

In the verdant heart of Nigeria, Delta State stands poised on the brink of a transformative era under the stewardship of its Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.

Driven by a vision of comprehensive and equitable development, Governor Oborevwori aims to deliver significant infrastructural upgrades across all 25 local government areas, infusing life and vitality into the communities he serves.

Governor Oborevwori has made it patently clear that no local government area will be left behind, in his drive for the sustainable wholesome development of the state.

His recent intention to hold town hall meetings across the state is not just an administrative task; it’s an invitation to the heart of Delta State—the people.

“Community engagement is vital,” he asserts, underscoring the importance of listening to the voices and concerns of Delta citizens.

The town hall meetings will act as platforms for citizens to articulate their needs and aspirations directly to the government.

“As we will embark on the journey, we will ensure that our policies are reflective of the people’s will,” the governor emphasized, embodying a philosophy that governance should be participatory, rather than prescriptive.

Central to Governor Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E Agenda—Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security—is a robust infrastructural push aimed at seamless connectivity and enhanced development across the state.

The recent partnership with construction titan, Julius Berger PLC, already entrusted with several flagship projects such as new bridges and flyovers, showcases an unwavering commitment to modernizing Delta State’s infrastructure.

Recognizing the importance of sustainable development, the governor has proposed a minimum of N1 billion for each local government area for road construction projects as part of the 2024 budget.

This significant financial commitment signals his determination to not only improve transportation networks but also stimulate local economies by encouraging local contractors and labour.

“We want to ensure that our people are not only beneficiaries of government projects, but also stakeholders in our development narrative,” he emphasizes, signalling an approach that promotes local engagement and economic growth.

Delta State’s infrastructure landscape has long been a spectre of promise and challenges. For years, inadequate road networks and insufficient access to basic amenities had stymied economic growth and made an otherwise vibrant state somewhat sluggish.

Governor Oborevwori recognizes these challenges and has come to the forefront with practical solutions.

“Good infrastructure is the backbone of any thriving economy,” he says, articulating his vision for a state where accessibility enables creativity, commerce, and opportunities.

“By connecting our localities, we can foster not just physical movement, but also the movement of ideas, businesses, and cultural exchange.”

One of the governor’s notable strategies is his commitment to prioritizing local contractors for some of these road construction projects.

By incorporating local talent and firms into infrastructural development, the governor aims to cultivate a thriving local economy that provides jobs, reduces unemployment, and reverses the brain drain affecting many regions in Nigeria.

“This is a win-win situation; not only do we develop our roads, but we also empower our people,” he asserts.

Local contractors not only bring familiarity with regional challenges but also a shared stake and investment in the community’s well-being.

Governor Oborevwori’s administration seeks to create a circular economy where infrastructure projects bolster local communities.

Governor Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E Agenda focuses on addressing not just infrastructural deficits but also addresses the broader socio-economic landscape of Delta State.

Each pillar of the agenda is meticulously crafted to reflect the needs and aspirations of the community.

The “Meaningful Development” aspect prioritises projects that yield tangible outcomes for the community. “We’re not just putting up structures; we’re developing ecosystems that will foster growth in those sectors, including those in education and health,” he notes passionately.

“Opportunities for All” denotes inclusivity in economic participation, where every citizen has a stake.
The governor aims to empower youth and women alike, offering training programmes and resources that equip them to thrive within their economic environments.

“Realistic Reforms” speaks to the need for policies that are applicable, practical, and adaptable to the dynamic socio-political climate of the state. Governor Oborevwori believes that for reforms to be effective, they must resonate with the lived experiences of the people.

“Enhanced Peace and Security” form the bedrock of any development agenda. Governor Oborevwori envisions a state where safety allows citizens to pursue opportunities without fear. “Safety is not just a condition; it is a prerequisite for development,” he states emphatically.

As the governor prepares to travel throughout the local government areas, one can sense an undercurrent of optimism.

The town hall meetings will be more than just a governmental formality; it will be a celebration of democracy in action.

Citizens convene, ready to share their aspirations and dreams on a canvas they hope the government will paint brightly.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s infrastructure drive is not merely about concrete and steel; it’s about crafting a lasting legacy that paves the way for generations to come.

His approach intertwines development with community participation, ensuring that every citizen feels heard and valued.

As the sun rises over Delta State, casting warm hues across its landscapes, there lies a renewed sense of possibility. The roads that lie ahead are interlaced with determination, unity, and an unwavering belief in a brighter tomorrow.

Let all Deltans rally behind the governor as he embarks on this journey of making Delta State an epitome of progress and prosperity—one filled with meaning, opportunities, realistic reforms, and enhanced peace and security.

The coming years will be pivotal as Delta State embarks on this ambitious journey. With communities galvanized and infrastructure investments beginning to sprout and flourish, the stage is set for a renaissance that promises transformative change.

As Governor Oborevwori continues to forge ahead, one thing is clear: the future looks bright for Delta State, and its citizens are ready to walk that road together.
