The Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed profound sadness following the death of Pope Francis, calling the late pontiff a symbol of peace, humility, and compassion, whose influence will resonate for generations worldwide.
Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. His papacy, which lasted over a decade, was characterized by significant reforms and unwavering humanitarian initiatives.
In a statement released in Asaba and signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori joined global leaders in mourning the respected religious figure, whose life was devoted to service, inclusiveness, and justice.
He highlighted that Pope Francis was not only the spiritual leader of more than a billion Catholics, but also an influential global presence who impacted numerous lives across different faiths and nations through his steadfast support for the vulnerable and disenfranchised.
“The passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis, represents a great loss not only for the Catholic Church but for all of humanity,” the governor remarked.
Governor Oborevwori added, “His teachings, humility, and unwavering commitment to peace and unity will continue to serve as a guiding influence for many.”

The governor reflected on the Pope’s advocacy for social justice, climate action, and interfaith dialogue, praising his courageous efforts to reform and modernize the Church while remaining true to its foundational values of compassion and love.
Oborevwori encouraged Catholics in Nigeria and around the globe to stay true to their faith and to honor the Pope’s legacy by upholding the principles he championed throughout his life.
“The world grieves for a man who dedicated his life to the service of others, who taught not only through words but by example. We celebrate a well-lived life and pray for the peace of his soul,” the governor concluded.
