The Federal Government has initiated the construction of a 17.5-kilometer dual carriage access road, aimed at enhancing accessibility to the Second Niger Bridge.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Monday, signaling significant progress in addressing transportation challenges in the region.
During the event, President Bola Tinubu, represented by Delta Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, emphasized his administration’s dedication to improving road networks, promoting safety, and bolstering trade and commerce throughout Nigeria.
The successful opening of the Second Niger Bridge to traffic in December 2022 marked a pivotal moment in facilitating transportation between the South East and other areas of the country.
“This bridge stands as a monumental infrastructure project, crucial for linking the Asaba-Benin and Onitsha-Enugu dual carriageways, which serve as key highways in Nigeria,” President Tinubu remarked.
He highlighted that the access road project underscores the government’s commitment to fostering infrastructure development and stimulating economic growth.
“A robust and resilient economy relies on modern infrastructure, public amenities, and expanded social services,” he added.
The President further noted that well-developed transportation networks enhance mobility, create job opportunities, promote tourism, facilitate the movement of goods and services, and elevate overall living standards.
Emphasizing the importance of infrastructure investment, Tinubu shared that governments worldwide recognize the need for robust infrastructure to achieve economic and industrial progress.
He acknowledged that Nigeria’s current infrastructure does not align with its growth ambitions and reiterated the government’s resolve to modernize roads, railways, and waterways as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
As he officially launched the project, President Tinubu commended both Delta and Anambra state governments for their collaborative efforts.
He called for patience and cooperation from motorists during the construction period, assuring them that the contractors are fully capable of completing the project on time and to the highest standards.
In his opening address, Governor Oborevwori lauded President Tinubu’s dedication to advancing infrastructure across Nigeria.
He noted the simultaneous flag-off of the Benin-Asaba Expressway rehabilitation, emphasizing the strategic importance of both projects for regional connectivity and commerce.
“These infrastructure developments are vital for facilitating trade and economic interactions, and on behalf of the people of Delta State, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to the President for his exceptional leadership and commitment to infrastructure renewal,” Oborevwori stated.
Minister of Works David Umahi praised Governor Oborevwori for his dedication to maintaining peace and promoting progress in Delta State.
He acknowledged the state government’s initiatives as vital contributions to federal road improvements, which have significantly reduced the federal government’s burden.
“Your dedication to the welfare of your constituents and your impressive projects demonstrate your progressive leadership. Delta State has become a vibrant construction site, and I am proud of the ongoing developments,” Umahi remarked.
Engr. Olufunsho Adebiyi, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Works, outlined that the access road will create a crucial transportation link between Delta and Anambra States.
He described the road as a strategic route that will enhance connectivity across multiple communities, reducing congestion and promoting sustainable economic development in the region.
