The Delta State Government reaffirmed on Friday that it has not taken on any debt since Governor Sheriff Oborevwori assumed leadership on May 29, 2023.
During a press conference held in Asaba, State Commissioner for Finance, Chief Fidelis Tilije, addressed recent claims made by an online news outlet, emphasizing that the state has not engaged in any borrowing arrangements with any organization, whether local or international.
He stated, “Delta State has not entered into any borrowing relationship—be it with individuals, corporations, banks, or other entities. Since this administration began on May 29, 2023, we have not borrowed a single kobo.”
Commissioner Tilije proudly asserted that Delta remains one of the strongest financial states in the country, saying, “I can confidently claim that Delta State is financially robust compared to other states in Nigeria. I am fully aware of our financial standing and the efforts being undertaken by this administration.”
He continued, “I unequivocally reiterate that this administration has not incurred any new debts since May 29, 2023. Although we have invested significantly in infrastructure development, we are diligently managing existing debts.”
Tilije highlighted improvements in the state’s contractual relationships, noting, “In the past, it was challenging to provide advance payments to contractors, but now, we are able to offer 30% to 40% in advance payments for major contracts. Discussions with the Governor indicate that we may increase advance payments to 70% during the upcoming dry season to combat inflation and ensure project progress without contract adjustments.”
He emphasized the administration’s commitment to creating value for the people of Delta, urging recognition of the Governor’s efforts in securing funding for ongoing projects.
“I would like to stress once more, as the Delta State Commissioner for Finance, that we have not borrowed any money from any institution since May 29, 2023. I am prepared to defend this statement in any forum,” he added.
Mr. Charles Aniagwu, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, praised Governor Oborevwori, describing him as a leader of outstanding integrity who promotes transparency in governance.
Aniagwu commented, “We have undertaken numerous projects over the past 19 months, all funded through the state’s available resources. At no point in this period has the government sought loans.
“We are solely relying on our state’s revenue streams, maintaining a position of solid liquidity and effective financial management under the Oborevwori administration.”
He expressed surprise at reports suggesting that Delta State leads in borrowing, as the administration continues to demonstrate fiscal responsibility.
