Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has urged Nigerians to refrain from inflammatory remarks and divisive behaviors to promote sustainable peace, unity, and development in the country.

He emphasized that this commitment aligns with the noble sacrifices made by the nation’s fallen heroes and veterans.

The governor made this appeal during a special interdenominational thanksgiving mass held at Emmanuel The Saviour Catholic Church in Asaba, commemorating the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration.

Represented by the State Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, Governor Oborevwori stressed the importance of honoring the sacrifices of those who served and encouraging a collective effort towards peace, unity, and justice.

He reminded attendees of the importance of praying for global peace, particularly concerning the ongoing conflicts in Israel-Palestine and Russia-Ukraine.

The thanksgiving service is part of the activities planned to observe Armed Forces Remembrance Day, a time dedicated to honoring the nation’s heroes while encouraging reflection on the country’s past, present, and future.

Highlighting the sacrifices made by many to protect the country’s sovereignty and maintain its unity, Governor Oborevwori praised their bravery and unwavering faith in Nigeria. He urged that the commitment to supporting veterans and their families should extend beyond annual observances.

The governor reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to actively supporting veterans and called upon them to organize meaningful initiatives that would enhance the living conditions of ex-servicemen, thus complementing government efforts.

Moreover, Governor Oborevwori urged those in positions of authority to lead with integrity and the fear of God, ensuring that their choices and policies align with the principles of good governance for the benefit of all citizens.

Monsignor John Aduba, Rector of Saint Joseph Pro Cathedral, delivered a sermon emphasizing the need to celebrate active military personnel and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for national unity.

He expressed gratitude to all soldiers—active, retired, and deceased—for their selfless service and highlighted the importance of addressing the needs of the families of fallen heroes.

During the service, the Deputy Governor, Sir Onyeme, read the first lesson, while the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, read the second.

Following the readings, Sir Onyeme and other distinguished guests joined service commanders and veterans in expressing special gratitude to God.

The observance of the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day will culminate on Wednesday with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Cenotaph in Asaba.
