Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called upon the twenty-five Local Government Council Chairmen in the state to implement the new minimum wage for their workers beginning November 2024.

The Governor issued this directive on Tuesday during a meeting with leaders from the Delta State chapters of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), and the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE).

The meeting was attended by key officials, including the Auditor General for Local Government, the Secretary to the State Government, the Chief of Staff, the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, the Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, and the Accountant-General of the State.

Governor Oborevwori emphasized that the recent enactment of the Local Government autonomy law has placed additional responsibilities on the Councils.

He urged them to ensure the implementation of the new minimum wage for their workers, effective November 2024.

Moreover, he encouraged the Council Chairmen to adhere strictly to procurement laws in all their purchasing activities.

He also proposed the organization of a retreat aimed at enhancing the financial management skills of relevant Council officials, with active participation from the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).
