Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, emphasized the vital role of the media in Nigeria’s democracy during his address at the 30th anniversary celebration of The Pointer newspaper in Asaba.
He encouraged media professionals to commit to accurate and balanced reporting, as well as to foster national unity through their work.
At the event, themed “Honoring Truth and Unity Through Excellence in Public Communication,” Oborevwori received The Pointer’s “Exemplary Democrat and Transformational Leadership Award.”
He highlighted the necessity for the media to engage in responsible discourse while holding public officials accountable, as dictated by the Constitution.
The Governor urged journalists to focus on news that promotes peace and cohesion, steering clear of content that may deepen religious and ethnic divides.
Reflecting on the newspaper’s 30-year journey, he said: “The Pointer has successfully navigated the complexities of print journalism, fulfilling its roles in information, education, and entertainment. It has also served as a valuable partner to the Delta State Government, advocating for unity and peace.”
He praised The Pointer for maintaining strong editorial standards and a professional layout, noting that many former journalists from the paper have gone on to serve in significant government positions.
However, Oborevwori acknowledged the challenges facing the publication, including declining circulation and limited advertising revenue, alongside a weak online presence.
“After three decades, it should strive for financial independence rather than continued reliance on government support,” he stated.
He urged the newspaper’s management to reassess their operations to enhance sustainability and profitability. “In the current digital age, there is no reason why The Pointer cannot establish a robust online presence,” he added.
The Governor commended the board, led by Ebenezer Okorodudu, for initiatives aimed at revitalizing the paper and encouraged them to develop targeted products to increase revenue.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency and collaboration with the press, urging journalists to verify their information for accuracy and fairness.
Former Minister of Information, Prof. Sam Oyavbaire, praised The Pointer as a leading state-owned publication and urged its team to intensify efforts in promoting state initiatives, emphasizing the importance of ongoing staff training.
State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, noted the newspaper’s success in fulfilling its information dissemination mandate and called on the Governor to increase print runs due to sustained demand.
In his welcome address, Olorogun Ebenezer Okorodudu highlighted The Pointer’s dedication to providing accurate information for its readership across various platforms. He also mentioned that 20% of the newspaper’s revenue is allocated for staff training and development, reinforcing its commitment to truth, unity, and the implementation of the State Governor’s MORE Agenda.
