The Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH) in Oghara, Ethiope West Local Government Area, has received national and West African accreditation for its surgery department, among other programs.
During a press briefing, State Commissioner for Health Dr. Joseph Onojaeme shared the positive news following a meeting with Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, senior officials of the teaching hospital, and representatives from the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA).
Dr. Onojaeme noted that the hospital is actively pursuing accreditation for additional departments, including Internal Medicine, Radiology, and Community Medicine.
He stated, “The leadership of the Hospital Management, along with the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), expressed their gratitude to the Governor for his contributions to the hospital’s advancement.”
“Just a month ago, the Governor approved the purchase of a CT scan for the hospital, and the staff has requested additional equipment to enhance the working conditions for both employees and patients.
“Governor Oborevwori has also committed to improving resources for Eco-cardiography and MRI services, with plans to expedite the procurement process.”
“The past reliance on state government funding for department accreditation has shifted significantly; the hospital’s internally generated revenue has increased considerably.
“Just two weeks ago, we received accreditation for the Surgery Department, and we anticipate further accreditation for additional departments in the near future.”
Currently, efforts are focused on securing accreditation for the Radiology and Dental departments, as well as Internal Medicine.
In their remarks, Acting Chief Medical Director Dr. Awunor Nyemike, Acting MDCAN Chairman Prof. Jude Uchendu, and NMA State Chairman Dr. Israel Adaigho praised Governor Oborevwori for his commitment to enhancing hospital services.
The meeting concluded with the presentation of a plaque to the Governor, recognizing his dedication to the development of the hospital and the broader community.
