Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, declared on Friday that the revival of Sapele—formerly a center of economic activity—has officially begun, marked by the construction of over 15 kilometers of internal roads in the historic city.

Governor Oborevwori shared this news at the inaugural reunion and business summit organized by the Sapele Memories Development Foundation at the Sapele Athletics Club.

Represented by the State Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), Oborevwori stated that his administration is taking significant steps to enhance infrastructure, thereby creating a conducive environment for sustainable economic growth in Sapele.

He commended the organizers of the Sapele Memories Development Foundation for their initiative, noting that it aligns perfectly with his vision for a unified Delta.

“This gathering represents the collaborative spirit of Sapele, where individuals from various political backgrounds and religious affiliations have come together,” he remarked.

“My goal as your governor is to foster unity among the people of Delta, making it possible for us all to come together for the common good.”

The Commissioner for Works, Charles Aniagwu, further detailed progress on projects, including the Okirighwre-Benin Road, for which contracts have been awarded, with an expected completion date of May next year.

“We envision a state where everyone works together, regardless of political differences,” Aniagwu stated. “Governor Oborevwori understands the developmental needs of Sapele. We have already contracted over 15 kilometers of internal road construction and provided up to 40 percent mobilization to contractors to expedite the work.”

He assured attendees that Sapele is on the path to significant improvement. “Once these projects are completed, Sapele will surpass its previous stature.

“Our aim is to create an environment where businesses can thrive, ultimately boosting employment opportunities.”

Aniagwu emphasized that the Oborevwori administration is focused not only on Sapele but also on development across all three senatorial districts in Delta State.

“We are enhancing connectivity among communities, including fast-tracking the Ughelli-Asaba Expressway project.”

Addressing security and development concerns, Aniagwu urged community leaders to engage with residents about the importance of peace and security for attracting investment and development.

Professor Sam Oyovbaire, the event’s chairman, praised Professor Hope Eghagha for initiating the Sapele renaissance and encouraged residents to work together for the city’s revitalization.

He suggested that Sapele deserves a university and increased industrial activity.

The Orodje of Okpe, HRM Maj Gen. Felix Mujakperuo (rtd), also commended the community’s efforts to rebuild Sapele and urged them to tackle local security challenges to restore the city’s former glory.

Chief Ighoyota Amori recalled Sapele’s prosperous past, particularly noting its significance as the home of the once-thriving African Timber and Plywood company.

In his welcoming remarks, Professor Hope Eghagha, President of the Sapele Memories Development Foundation, emphasized the reunion’s purpose: to give back to the city that shaped their lives.

He described Sapele as a “melting pot” free of ethnic divisions and expressed a shared commitment to restore that spirit. He also highlighted recent community efforts, including providing 57 free surgeries.

The event drew numerous dignitaries, including the Ovie of Idjere Kingdom, HRM Monday Obukohwo Whisky, Udurhie I, among others.
